Berno – Brooklyn, US
After a 40 minute metro ride, I arrived at Newkirk plaza in Brooklyn where I met Berthold, a.k.a. Berno. When we walked to his place, it was clear that this was his neighborhood. He knows the buildings, the places and the people. This is where he grew up, going to dinner at his grandma’s house after grade school… It’s his house now, and the memories of his youth and family still live on in the photographs and knickknacks that are scattered throughout. Berno can be his own person here. He never exactly fits in, though, with his shiny jacket, jewelry and gold teeth. He is the center of attention and the life of the party, wherever he goes. His love for music, and especially expressive K-pop, compelled him to release his first single later this year. He literally put the writing on the wall of his house, “keep going mofo”, telling himself to never stop being his own person.
