After some texting back and forth, she invited me to one of her performances in Tel Aviv. The show was amazing: a psychedelic gypsy-kitsch, black magic infused performance. A few days later, Karma She welcomed me into her house and introduced me to her ‘real me’: Carmel Michaeli. She told me she uses her alias to question identity and religion. But as we moved through the house, I could see that Karma She and Carmel are actually inseparable. From her clothes to the sculpturesque accessories, everything means something, and it clashes with the old-world surroundings she’s living in. What impressed me most, is that Carmel teaches the art of critical performance and self-expression to kids and college students. A rebellious act in a country that always seems to be caught up in conflict.
