Karma She – Tel Aviv, IL
Through Facebook I came across Karma She, an Israeli singer whose extravagant looks instantly caught my eye. After some texting back and forth, she invited me to one of her performances in Tel Aviv. The show was amazing: a psychedelic gypsy-kitsch, black magick infused performance. A few days later, Karma She welcomed me in her house and introduced me to her ‘real me’: Carmel Michaeli. She told me she uses her alias to question identity and religion, but as we moved through the house, I could see that Karma She and Carmel are actually inseparable. From her clothes to the sculpturesque accessories, everything means something, and it clashes with the old-world surroundings she’s living in. What impressed me most is that Carmel teaches the art of critical performance and self-expression to kids and college students. A rebellious act in a country that always seems to be caught up in conflict.
