Poland has been identified as the worst country in the EU for LGBTQ+ individuals — a distinction that sits uneasily alongside the broader European movement towards greater freedom and equality. It was this contradiction that brought Dekker to Warsaw.
SAGA stands for Sexuality And Gender Acceptance. It is also, simply, a story. The Warsaw SAGA tells both: the stories of people who remain true to themselves despite the hostility around them, drawing resilience from the very challenges they face. The portraits focus on self-expression, joy and liberation — not as a denial of the difficulties, but as a response to them.
The Warsaw SAGA was published as part of The Zine Project and presented as part of Birds of Paradise at TORCH Gallery Amsterdam in 2025.
