Addressing Structural Inequalities in Amsterdam

I often seek stories beyond my usual surroundings. But even in the Netherlands, including Amsterdam—our sometimes less-than-liberated capital—there are issues that deserve more attention. One such issue is the growing problem of racism against people of Asian descent.

This zine shines a light on seven eccentric and vibrant individuals with Asian heritage who unapologetically embrace their uniqueness, using self-expression to (both directly and indirectly) challenge stereotypes.

– ’Ive realized that society’s obsession with categorizing people limits our ability to truly see each other. It perpetuates stereotypes, creates exclusion, and erases the richness of duality.
– ”I’ve come to understand that my family’s history in the Netherlands is deeply intertwined with the country’s colonial past.”
–”For me, storytelling is about universal human experiences rather than race. I believe that stories people can relate to on an emotional level helps normalize diversity in all its forms.”

This is the second-to-last zine in the series, leading up to the grand finale. The final edition, Zine Nº 10, will be released at my solo exhibition, opening on April 12, 2025, at Torch Gallery in Amsterdam. Mark your calendar!
